Science Outreach: Odyssey STEM Academy

We have been working with Odyssey STEM Academy, a Paramount Unified School district high school that was established in 2017.

This school is focused on equitably preparing students for higher education. The main focus is to educate students on applications of science and technology. Students are required to complete a senior capstone project before they graduate and require a field mentor to guide them on their project. The UCLA Science Policy group has created opportunities for 5 graduate students to mentor 2 or 3 students on their capstone projects.

Capstone projects include:

  1. Creating an app to raise awareness for teens dealing with anxiety and depression

  2. Creating an app to increase awareness on eating disorders and how to support students dealing with these disorders

3. Mental health awareness in foster youth

4. Redesigning workspace based on what is known about the brain to enhance the student experience

We have also partnered with the UCLA Science Project to facilitate 3 virtual field trips for Odyssey STEM Academy.

Topics have included imposter syndrome in STEM, what is a PhD and lab tours/research overview.
