Exploring Your Universe 2020

By Anna Goldberg, Community Engagement Officer

On November 1st, SPG at UCLA hosted a virtual booth at “Exploring Your Universe” (EYU), an annual event organized by graduate students that provides a day of free science education to children in the surrounding UCLA community.

While the event has been conducted in person in years past, 2020 marked the first virtual presentation of EYU due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the shift in format, hundreds of community members logged into the fair to hear from keynote speaker Andrea Ghez, the 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, and to virtually visit a variety of science booths hosted by different UCLA organizations.

Similar to years past, SPG’s booth centered around encouraging attendees to think about the various roles that science plays in society. As a club, we have greatly enjoyed participating in this event for multiple years and contributing to the science education of children in the community.

EYU makes accessible to children a comprehensive introduction to numerous areas of science. It is always a joy to see kids connecting to different fields of science at such a young age. We look forward to next year’s event and those in the years to follow!
